Can my PC play Age of Wonders III

By Cliff Henjum July 11, 2019

A little over five years ago (March 31, 2014), Triumph Studios and Paradox Interactive released Age of Wonders III, an epic turn-based strategy game with some RPG elements mixed in. Imagine a game like Civilization 6 with a healthy helping of fantasy elements scattered throughout. Choose an RPG-style leader class from among the Sorcerer, Theocrat, Rogue, Warlord, Archdruid, or the Dreadnought, each with their own unique abilities that lend themselves to various playstyles. There is also a powerful level editor that allows you to create your own maps and campaigns (Note: This feature may increase the system requirements and the only supported language is English). The main system requirements for Age of Empires III are actually pretty tame and should be passable by most modern PCs.

When looking at the minimum system requirements, laptop users should feel pretty good about being able to run Age of Empires III since it officially supports integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 and above. The other video cards that are listed on the minimum requirements by the devs are the Radeon HD 3870 and the GeForce 8800 with 512 MB of VRAM. While it’s one of the few games to officially support Intel HD Graphics 3000, it isn’t the only one - the new Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is also a laptop savior. The news gets even better when you move on to the CPU requirements - only a 13 year-old Core 2 Duo E6600 or Athlon 64 X2 5000+ is needed to get it up and running on Low Settings. All your computer needs after the CPU and GPU is 2 GB of RAM. At the time of writing this, Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 8.1 are all officially supported. The devs want it noted that the Level Editor is only available to Windows users.

While passing the minimum system requirements will enable you to play on a 1024x768 resolution, perhaps you want to expand your view and up the graphics past Low Settings. In order to do that, your PC will need to pass the recommended requirements as well. A lot of modern computers should still be able to pass these so don’t fret too much. An older quad-core CPU, specifically a Core 2 Quad Q6600 or a Phenom X4 9900 will get your computer rolling with a high FPS. The recommended video cards, GeForce GTX 460 and Radeon HD 6850, are among some of the most common cards to be listed as requirements for games. Some games that fall under that category are Embark, Railway Empire, and Human Fall Flat. The RAM amount from minimum to recommended only goes up by 2 GB for a total of 4 GB needed. If your computer passes all of these specs, then you can expect to be able to play Age of Empires III on a 1920x1080 screen resolution on High Graphics.

As stated before, please note that the use of the Level Editor might put an additional strain on your computer. Adding more units, textures, and overall size to the maps, compared to the default maps, is a bit like playing The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim with multiple mods running. Also, in order to play online, a free Triumph Account is required, but you can play single player and Hot Seat modes from your own computer with a guest account. Enjoy conquering the world in Age of Wonders III!
